The IFAC Fellow Award is given to persons who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions in the field of interest of IFAC, in the role as an Engineer/Scientist, Technical Leader, or Educator.
The first Fellows were appointed at the IFAC World Congress in Prague in July 2005.
If you plan to submit an IFAC Fellow Nomination Form, please find instructions below to assist you in this nomination process. Strict adherence to this procedure is essential; otherwise, a candidate may be placed at a serious disadvantage and possibly even excluded from consideration.
Any person is eligible to serve as a nominator with the exception of members of the Fellows Selection Committee (FSC), and IFAC Council Members. The nominator is responsible for the information provided. The nominator is asked to read the Nominator Information, complete the Nomination Form according to the requirements given below and to alert the persons given as references that they have been named referees.
The IFAC Fellow award provides a distinction of excellence in the Federation and is conferred to a small number of outstanding scientists or engineers by the IFAC Council, based on the proposal of the Fellow Selection Committee (FSC). The FSC Committee shall consider:
A nomination must be supported by at least three, but no more than five references from internationally reputed experts in the field who are aware of the Candidate's contributions. It is to be noted that the choice of references is important for the success of the candidate’s nomination. Members of the IFAC Council and the Fellow Selection Committee are not eligible to serve as referees. The election of newly elected Fellows will be announced shortly after the completion of the selection process carried out by the IFAC Council. IFAC will inform all candidates and their nominators of the election results by e-mail and/or first class mail. Nominators of unsuccessful candidates will be notified by e-mail and/or first class mail.

This is an IFAC award to a distinguished control engineer, presented at each IFAC World Congress as a memorial to the late Giorgio Quazza, a leading Italian electrical and control engineer who served IFAC in many capacities in a most distinguished manner. The Nichols Medal recognizes outstanding contributions of an individual to design methods, software tools and instrumentation, or to significant projects resulting in major applications and advancement of control education. The spirit is captured by the name of Nathaniel Nichols, one of the pioneers of control engineering. The medal is awarded by the IFAC Council on the recommendation of a selection committee. Established in 2000, to be first awarded at the 15th IFAC World Congress in Barcelona in 2002. This is an IFAC award to an individual, or a team of individuals, presented at each IFAC World Congress, who has made a significant contribution to industrial applications of control. The Automatica Editorial Board awards prizes for the best papers published in Automatica. At each IFAC World Congress three monetary prizes are presented to the authors of three papers selected by an Automatica Prize Awards Committee.
The prizes are given for outstanding contributions to the theory and/or practice of control engineering or control science, documented in a paper published in the IFAC Journal Automatica. The prize funds are provided by the publisher of Automatica, Elsevier Ltd.
The Control Engineering Practice Editorial Board awards prizes for the best papers published in Control Engineering Practice. The Mechatronics Journal Editorial Board awards prizes for the best papers published in the Mechatronics Journal. This prize is awarded at each IFAC World Congress for the best paper of an author (authors) younger than 35 years.
Candidates for both of the above-mentioned prizes are nominated by a selection committee appointed by the Council. The prizes consist of a monetary prize and a certificate.
This award is presented at each IFAC World Congress for the best Control Engineering textbook in one of the official IFAC languages for which the first edition(s) occurred not later than the Congress just prior to the one at which the award is presented. It recognizes the author(s) of the textbook(s) judged to have most contributed to the education of control engineers. The candidates for the prize are nominated by a selection committee, chaired ex officio by the Control Education Committee Chairman. The books under consideration come before the committee through recommendation of the control engineering community. The prize consists of a monetary prize and a certificate.
This prize is awarded at each IFAC World Congress for the best poster paper. Candidates for this prize are nominated by a selection committee appointed by the National Organizing Committee of the Congress. The prize consists of a monetary prize funded by the Congress organizers and a certificate.
This award is presented to IFAC officials who have served and contributed substantially to IFAC in various capacities, according to a criterion set by the Council. The award consists of a certificate and a lapel pin and is presented to the candidates on the occasion of the IFAC World Congress.
