The revenue of IFAC chiefly consists of annual membership fees paid by the NMOs, publications income from the IFAC Journals Automatica, Control Engineering Practice and Annual Reviews of Automatic Control, and from the publications of IFAC events. It is used for administrative expenses as recommended by the Administrative and Finance Committee. Its recommendations are approved by the Council which is held accountable by the General Assembly for the expenses.

All Official Positions are voluntary and unpaid. The Officers' activities, even travel expenses for the IFAC meetings, are supported by their own resources.

The membership fees, as determined by the General Assembly, are established in 4 categories, each NMO selecting the appropriate category.
